Encrypting Calls - For Polycom & Cisco User Only

Aptela enables encryption of calls between two end points. At this time, endpoints are limited to supported Polycom SoundPoint IP phones and Cisco Small Business SPA phones configured to run over the Aptela network.

When making calls to unsecure, offnet destinations, particularly to mobile phones, the calls are not encrypted.

To enable encryption for your business:

Administrator will activate encryption for the account. To do this:

  • Log in as Administrator
  • Click on the My Account tab in the main navigation
  • Click on the General Settings tab
  • Check the box next to Encrypt All Calls (see the screen shot below)

BEFORE GETTING STARTED - Ensure that users requiring encryption are using phones that support encryption.

Polycom Phone Users:
  • Polycom models that do not support encryption: SoundPoint IP 320, 330, and 430 desktop phones and SoundStation IP 4000.
  • Although the Polycom IP 321, 331, and 335 support encryption, the devices do not display the padlock icon. These models may be a poor choice to use with this feature as there is no way to validate encryption.
  • Both parties should confirm that a padlock icon is displaying, validating that encryption is enabled.
  • If you do not see the icon and you think that encryption is enabled and should be working, a flash reset, pressing *864 or 7531, may resolve the issue.
Cisco Phone Users:
  • The Cisco SPA 303 and SPA 500 Series phones support encryption.
  • When the call is encrypted, the Cisco phone displays a dollar sign $ on the phone LCD before the status. Example:  $Ringing, $Answering  or $Connected
  • In addition, for the first 10 seconds of the encrypted call, the Cisco phone plays tones every few seconds in the background.
